Week 7 Web Architecture

Image
I have made it this far and I am feeling much more confident using Linux.  I feel that I can operate a Linux system pretty basically now.  I would still need to follow step by step instructions when installing anything on a Linux system, but I do know what to look for to know that I am in fact installing and how to check for installation. This week we worked with iptables and learning how to view and edit iptables in a Linux operating system. In this first screenshot we had to take what we learned from the lab and use it to delete line 5 using the command #iptables -D INPUT 5  which tells the system to delete line 5 and all of its contents, which you can see and confirm from the screenshot above. Earlier in the lab we changed settings that allowed telnet connections.  In this screenshot we are attempting to connect to plabfed01 via telnet from plabfed02, which is successful.  You need to know the ip address in order to attempt to connect via telnet. ...

Week 6 Web Architecture

Well, things seem to be getting easier and I am feeling more confident in completing the quiz and lab each week.  This week seemed to be particularly easy for me to catch on to.  I think it is because we are looking at it more from a programming perspective this week and writing in code.  This is what I am more familiar with.  Databases are completely new to me though, I even dropped my database with MySQL last session because it just seemed to be overwhelming to me and I couldn't catch on, at least not from where they were starting.  I felt like I was missing something from a previous class, but there were no prerequisites, or at least none that I hadn't already completed.  Now that we are getting into databases a little bit, I am already feeling better prepared to retry that class which just so happens to be next session! In doing this lab I learned how to install MySQL database onto a Linux system, as well as some familiar commands that we have learned...

Week 5 Web Architecture

The more and more we progress through the weeks, the more and more I am catching on to how to use Linux.  As frustrating as it is. a lot of what is helping it really stick with me is the repetitious nature of our platform for the lab.  I still have problems with it weekly either freezing up in some sort of way, or just not working in general to where I have to reboot the platform.  That of course in turn means I end up re-entering everything again.  This happens to me a couple of times each week.  There is also the fact of when I can't find what the error problem is, and sometimes I will reboot the platform to start from scratch.  Regardless, I am finding myself much faster with the keyboard and able to identify regular commands we have been using and knowing when and how to use them. This week I ran into some issues when using the links command to call either of the websites.  I have quadruple checked my work, and I cannot seem to find an issue ther...

Week 4 Web Architecture

This week got a little more confusing with the ftp.  Everything went smoothly until the end.  I changed the directives in hosts.deny and in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf file accordingly for the usera login and the anonymous login.  In the end the result was I was allowed to login both times regardless.  I tried it a couple of more times, but I got the same result.  So I am unsure if I misunderstood the concept or what, but I am including screenshots of all relevant screens depicting the change but the same results. Here is where I set anonymous_enable=NO Here is where I set anonymous_enable=YES Here is where I added usera to the hosts.deny file. Here was my first attempt at logging in as usera Here was my first attempt at logging in as anonymous Here was my second attempt at logging in as anonymous Here is my second attempt at logging in as usera Both outputs for each match, so I am not sure if somethin...

Week 3 Web Architecture

After reviewing the living lecture recording in WebEX I feel a little bit more comfortable with Linux.  It still isn't perfect, but after seeing different approaches such as the gedit and also navigating to the directory or folder it was in before editing has helped me grasp a better understanding of what is going on.  So far I have had far less problems with this lab.  The only problem I really ran into so far, was the platform froze up.  I am continuing to reboot the system but it keeps coming up with a connection time out message. Unfortunately it is looking like I might have to start all over again.  At least I know that the progress I had made, which was most of task A is operating correctly so that is a plus!  It is really frustrating that you can't save your progress in the lab platform. Below are the screenshots I captured from task A!  I am pretty excited that I was able to get positive results in this lab!  Moving on to Task B! ...

Week 2 Web Architecture

This week I learned a tremendous amount of Linux commands as well as how to ping IP addresses, checking and installing network managers, configuring DNS servers, etc.  Honestly I get very overwhelmed by the reading as I stated last week, but I learn from the hands on.  Unfortunately I have not been able to complete the lab because I believe they are doing some kind of work on the system because I have not been able to get the servers within the Practice Lab to turn on. They show busy and loading, then about halfway through, they power down completely again.  So I will update this accordingly once I complete the lab, which will probably be tomorrow at this point. UPDATE: I spent HOURS trying to figure out the lab for Week 2.  I couldn't even get passed Task A with making it work correctly.  I eventually just decided to move on and get what I could out of the lab even though the DNS setup was not configuring correctly.  I went up to my campus and tried to...

Week 1 Web Architecture

As I have seen from many others, I too am a first time blogger.  Seems pretty straight forward and easy to use though! During this first week of classes I have done hours of reading... I just finished with the Web Architecture reading assignments.  Am I the only one who gets slightly overwhelmed by the amount of reading?  I feel as though I spend hours reading, and then I feel like I retain nothing when it comes to technical reading such as this.  Maybe that is because I am more of a hands on learner.  I can read it and comprehend it, but until I utilize it myself, it doesn't seem to stick.  Regardless, it was a nice refresher, especially chapter 4, with familiarizing with Linux commands.  I have minimal Linux experience from the past, but I do look forward to understanding Linux a little better. I am about to begin the lab for this week now.  Looking forward to the lab, because I am looking forward to utilizing some of what I have read about ...
